Improving Your Home’s Curb Appeal

Why Is Your Lawnmower Not Properly Cutting The Grass?

If you are like the average homeowner, you probably pull out your lawnmower fairly frequently to trim your grass, and you fully expect your lawnmower to do its job when you do. However, whether you have a push mower or a riding mower, there will come a time when the thing refuses to cut the grass like it should.

Whether you leave behind strips of grass blades that look like a bad haircut or you roll the mower over the grass, and nothing happens, nothing can be more frustrating than a mower that will not cut the grass. Here is a look at a few of the likely reasons your lawnmower is not properly cutting the grass.

Are your mowing blades damaged?

Damaged mowing blades are perhaps the number one reason for a mower not cutting the grass. These blades are usually made of high-grade steel, and they do last a long time. However, on occasion, the mower blades may have to be replaced because they have run into one too many rocks or objects, leaving big dings and dents in the blades. Plus, your lawn mower blades should be sharpened every once and a while to maintain that sharp edge that easily slips through the grass blades while you mow.

Are your mower blades turning as they should?

The whole reason your lawn mower is capable of cutting the grass is that the blades are spinning at a high rate of speed to chop through the grass blades as you properly the mower forward. If the mower blades are not spinning, or not spinning correctly, it can definitely mean problems with grass not being cut. Once the mower is started, carefully look under the deck from a distance to see if you see the blades moving. If you do not, there could be issues with the bearings that turn the blades.

Is there anything wrong with the mowing deck?

The mowing deck of your mower supports several components that allow the blades to cut the grass when the mower is in operation. Plus, if the mowing deck is not sitting up properly off the ground, it will prevent the blades from turning because they are too close to the ground. Look at your mowing deck and see if it is leaving substantial enough space between the deck and the ground for the mower to properly function. If it is not, you may have to have the deck repaired.
