4 Tips For Using Your New Lawn Sprinkler System

Now that you have a new lawn sprinkler system in place, you are probably very excited to finally have the lush, green lawn you've been waiting for. However, you should know that your lawn will only be green and lovely if you use that sprinkler system properly! Here are four tips for using your new lawn sprinkler system to its fullest.

1. Program the sprinklers to run before dawn.

If you have a programmable sprinkler system, make sure you schedule the sprinklers to run before dawn. This serves two purposes. First, it allows you to use a little less water since the water won't be evaporating as quickly when the sun is not shining. Second, it is better for the grass, since water vaporizing off the surface of the grass blades in the sun can scorch the grass.

If you do not have a programmable sprinkler, remember to wake up early to water the grass daily. If getting up this early does not suit you, then try watering at night after the sun goes down.

2. Water for long enough.

It takes longer than you think to apply enough water to penetrate the top six inches of soil where the grass roots grow. If you have not had a lot of rain, let the sprinklers run for at least 20 minutes. If it has been moist out or you've been dedicated to watering every single day, 10 minutes once a day is generally okay.

3. Check the sprinkler range.

Depending on how your sprinklers were installed and the way your lawn is designed, there may be a few areas where the sprinklers don't exactly reach. Walk across your lawn after your first sprinkler session to see if there are any dry areas. If you do see dry areas, you'll either need to adjust your sprinklers or remember to separately hand-water those areas to keep them from getting brown.

4. Check sprinkler heads periodically.

Sprinkler heads can get clogged with dirt and debris. They might get stepped on and bent, or they might become disconnected from the water source. Get into the habit of checking over your sprinkler heads every week or two. This way, problems won't go undetected for so long that your lawn misses out on a lot of water.

Follow the four sprinkler system tips above, and you will enjoy a greener, more lush lawn all year long. For more information, contact a company like Pacific  Sunscapes.
