Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Lawn Turf in Great Condition for Your Customer's Sport Events

When a sports team wants to play a good game on a smooth playing field, they don't go to the local park to run and play upon a lumpy, bumpy, thinning lawn, but they go to a maintained professional playing field. On a quality playing field, they will find a smooth ground and level playing field where there is an expanse of turf that has been maintained to the right level.

So when you manage your playing field, it is important to keep it in good condition to keep your customer teams taken care of. Here are some tips to help you keep your playing field in good condition and healthy all season and into the next season.

1. Keep the Lawn Height Maintained

Throughout the playing season, from spring until fall, you must keep your lawn height maintained for continued team play. A turf that becomes too long will tangle around the player's feet, slow the balls, and also make the surface slippery when it becomes matted.

A good sports field requires the turf to be level and trimmed to a manageable height. This will require you to mow more than once a week. Depending on the type of turf and sports field, as an example of golf, the turf will need to be kept a specific height of only a few millimeters.

2. Handle Fall Maintenance

In the fall, it is important to handle some upkeep maintenance projects on your lawn turf to make sure it will emerge healthily and in good shape for the following spring. A lawn will receive a great deal of wear and traffic during the warm season, so it is essential to work on its condition and health in the fall.

First, you should overseed the lawn where any bare patches have emerged, either from heavy traffic or due to not enough watering. When an area of the turf lawn dies, you will need to rake over to loosen the soil, add some new lawn seed, and apply an optional layer of peat moss or mulch. This combined mixture will promote the regrowth of lawn in this area during the fall season and also in the spring. Then, the lawn will be ready for use next warm season.

You may also find the need to top dress your lawn. When your turf's soil surface becomes lumpy feeling with divots into the soil or mounds of soil protruding from the once-level soil surface, you will need to reapply a layer of soil to treat the irregularities. A layer of soil one to one and a half inches in thickness will fill in all the bumps and holes and will also cover any thatch thickness, leaving only the tops of the turf blades showing. The turf will be uniform once again and a level field for any sport.
