Improving Your Home’s Curb Appeal

Fall Maintenance You Should Do To Your Landscaping

Now that fall is here it is time to do some maintenance to your landscaping. This is important as it will help everything come back healthy when spring arrives. Below are some things you should start with so you will be ready.

Fertilize Your Lawn

Fall is the perfect time to fertilize your lawn no matter if you have cool-season or warm-season grass. Go to a garden center to purchase lawn fertilizer. There are different types of fertilizer that you can buy, such as liquid and granular. There is also lawn fertilizer that helps control insects.

Liquid fertilizer is easy to apply as you put it in a sprayer and spray your lawn. You can spread out granular fertilizer, which would be best if you have a small lawn. There are fertilizers that include chemicals that kill insects but will not harm your lawn. The best time to fertilize a lawn is in the fall after the last time you mow your lawn for the season.

Kill Weeds

There are many weeds that live on your lawn, and fall is the best time to kill them. This includes things like ground ivy, plantain, and dandelions. If you have too many to pull out by hand purchase an herbicide. Lawn herbicides do not kill the grass but kill the weeds. Look at the label of what you purchase to ensure your grass will not be damaged.

If you want to be sure you do not kill grass, apply the herbicide when the grass has become dormant and brown. You won't see any or very little of these weeds when the grass starts growing again in the spring.

Visit a garden center to purchase this herbicide, and they can help you choose a type that will not kill the grass.

Plant Flower Bulbs

Fall is the time to plant flower bulbs that you want to come up in the spring, such as daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, and more. If you live in a cold region, plant the bulbs in late October. If you live in a warmer region, plant bulbs in mid to late November. Read the label of the bulbs you purchase to learn how deep you need to plant them. The instructions will also tell you how close to plant the bulbs next to each other.

Squirrels love to eat many bulbs because they taste sweet, so you need to protect the bulbs with something like chicken wire.
